The information about your child's size and shape will be used to better fit the products they use everyday, like helmets, seats, and toys, and make spaces, like playgrounds, safer for them.
KidsCAN is an anthropometric survey organised by the TU Delft. In this scientific study, we are measuring and 3D scanning 1800 kids that live in The Netherlands aged between 0 and 16 years old. The study is on behalf of the European Committee for Standardization, with the goal of improving international standards in Europe.
As participants, kids from the ages of 0 to 16 will participate in this scientific study that will improve the safety of products for children. This is done at the TU Delft by a trained team of anthropometrists. Our measurement sessions are different depending on the age of your child. The measurement happens in a relaxed atmosphere and includes frequent breaks.
We divide them in 3 groups:
Children get measured mostly manually at our Amsterdam and Delft locations. This measurement session takes 30 minutes for babies and 75 minutes for older children. The manual measurements are complemented by use of the hand and foot scanner but not the body scanner (except for 3 year olds measured in Amsterdam where a single body scan is taken as part of a pilot).
As part of a school outing, these kids will be measured both manually as well as through 3D scanning of body, hand and foot. The entire session, including manual measurements and 3D scans, is part of a workshop during their outing.
Youngsters can come to our Delft location as a group of four friends. They will be measured both manually as well as through 3D scanning of body, hand and foot. The entire session, including manual measurements and 3D scans, is expected to last approximately 90 minutes.
Here are some examples of the measurements we take.
The anthropometrist will measure the proportions of the body, head, hand and foot by using anthropometric instruments.
These scanners work by taking photos of the hand and foot. This scanner does not emit any radiation.
The participant goes in the body scanner and photos are taken from all directions to create a 3D model.
Every child that participates in the KidsCAN project helps to improve European standards and contributes to a safer world for children!
But there is more:
You and your child can see how scientific research is conducted at TUDelft, and you can observe the functioning of a 3D scanner up close.
For children aged 12+, your child (together with you) can be 3D scanned in a funpose. For options to order 3D-printed figurines you will be referred to Scanologics (there are expenses involved with placing an order).
Your child will receive a small gift as a token of appreciation at the end of the session.
